Perfect for deep cleaning without excessive strain, the self-propelled Hoover WindTunnel Ultra upright takes charge of its own locomotion both coming and going. In addition, Hoovers WindTunnel technology creates a powerful double air path for maximum suction and cleaning. The vacuum even provides feedback on cleaning progress with the Embedded Dirt Finder--a feature that scans the floor for debris, signaling you if theres still dirt to be picked up. You can operate the Dirt Finder on a regular setting for your routine cleaning or on a high setting for your deep-cleaning sprees.

The WindTunnel Ultra is designed for both bare floors and carpets, with a 15-inch cleaning path and three adjustable nozzle heights to accommodate variation in carpet depth. Dirt collection is bagged using Hoovers Microfiltration system, and a helpful indicator signal keeps you posted on the bags status. A HEPA filter assists the bag, trapping 100 percent of dust mites and 99.98 percent of ragweed and common grass pollens.

The vacuum comes handsomely equipped for attachment cleaning with a stretch hose, two extension wands, a crevice tool, an upholstery tool, and a dusting brush all on board. (The Dirt Finder does not work with the attachments.) The most rigorous attachment is a powered hand tool with its own rotating brush roll--great for carpeted stairs and durable upholstery. Other useful elements include quick-release cord hooks, a carrying handle, a headlight, and a view window over the brush roll. Hoover covers the machine with a one-year warranty.

"Run! - Far and Fast and get away from this machine" 2009-01-14
By Terry L. Burgess
A total piece of plastic junk! This machine was only used for about four months before things started to break. First the self-propelled mechanism switch, then one-by-one all of the little switches started breaking off.

Since it is only used once a week, I'm guessing it lasted through 13 uses! PLEASE don't even THINK about buying one of these!

"Too heavy, on-off switch inoperative" 2008-12-06
By NAPhew (Colleyville, TX United States)
I also bought this because of a Consumer Reports review. It is TOO HEAVY so the self-propelled feature is critical. It eats belts or throws them quite regularly. Most irritating, the power switch turns the vacuum on but won't turn it off and there is no adjustment to fix the problem. This is a perfect example of what's wrong with American Manufacturing. Poor design and cheap materials at a high price. Oh, did I mention the unit was manufactured in Mexico.

"Short time....but great so far" 2008-07-13
By PJ Fox
I've only had this vacuum for about 2 weeks now. So I can't comment on longevity and durability. But for ease of use, this vacuum is the best. With the self-propelled on it easily glides across the carpet with no effort at all. It is, as others have stated, a bit heavy...I'm guessing mainly because of the extra self-propelled motor. So if you're going to be lugging this up and down steps it may get old. But I assure you once you get it up the steps it's worth the extra weight because of how easy it is to use.

"My 5yo model is fine!" 2007-11-23
By Chamoudah (Napa, CA United States)
I've had mine for 5+ years -- bought it cheap (well under $100) long ago at Target. Since then have had to replace only 1 belt (a month ago) despite weekly use on thick carpets with 4 indoor cats. I wish my car were half as reliable!

 "Too heavy" 2007-08-28
By Nielda (Philly USA)
I bought this machine because of the great review on Consumer Reports, let me tell you they were really wrong this time. The machine is so heavy that the people who clean my house decided to bring their own machine. I don't use it much as its a pain to lug around and the suction is not that great. I have had to replace the belts several times in the first few months all original belts. Stay away. I wish I knew a better machine to recommend but I am still looking myself.

 "Would never buy again" 2009-11-14
By Lynn C. (USA)
I bought this machine with the highest of hopes that it would last for years and years with good care. Before the first year was up, the power switch stopped working. Although it was covered by service contract, i had to drive 35 miles one way to take it for repair. (and the repain man was not at all pleasant) That first repair lasted three weeks, the second repair lasted 2 weeks and since then it has never worked at the switch. The self propell feature has been stuck in the on position for 2 years. I would never ever purchase a Hoover again. I would have loved to give a glowing review! Sorry Hoover !!!!! Honesty IS the best policy !

 "Disappointed" 2009-08-11
By M. Parks (Idaho)
I bought the vacuum in Feb. 2007 because I wanted one with the self-propelled feature. I had only used it once or twice when it started making a horrible noise. It worked fine, however.

I recently discovered that the off/on switch had stopped working. Fortunately, it was in the on position, so it could start and stop it by plugging it in.

Than the self-propelled feature stopped working. I decided to try changing the flat belt, which operates that feature. After some struggle, I was able to get the old one off, but there is no way I will ever be able to get the new one on. The manual says "extra effort may be required to stretch the belt onto pulley." That is an understatement.

I live 150 miles away from the nearest authorized service center. I'm wondering if it is worth fixing at this point.

 "very disappointed" 2009-03-24
By Betsy B (NC)
I bought this machine a couple years ago to replace an Electrolux canister that worked but was quite old. I wanted an upright vac for ease of use on carpets, as well as something that would take up less storage space in my small house. I was disappointed from the very beginning, for several reasons:

1. This machine has mediocre suction - even when the bag is empty it doesn't come close to what I expected.

2. The attachments do not fit snugly, so I have to hold the extensions onto the hose as I am using them otherwise they don't stay in place. They are prone to come apart at any joint, so using 2 extensions and an attachment for hard floors is ridiculously impossible. It keeps coming apart.

3. The extensions - both of them - cracked within a couple months of purchase. Very poor quality.

4. The hand tool for carpeted stairs has a beater bar powered only by suction, so as the bag gets full the suction diminishes and the bar rotates slower and slower.

5. The machine is VERY loud and VERY heavy. I find it unmanageable on stairs, and need my husband to carry it up and down the stairs for me.

6. The operation of the self-propelled feature is very jerky.

7. When using the attachments, the hose is not long and the vacuum tends to tip over unless I either hold it with one hand while vacuuming with the other (and please refer back to point #2 - this becomes incredibly challenging) or turn the vacuum so it is being pulled forward, with the hose wrapped over the top, which results in less available hose length.

This is the first and last Hoover upright I will ever own.

This self propelled vac is a real powerhouse. Make sure you don't change the carpet settings unless the vac is locked in the upright. ( a repairman told me the self propelled could be damaged )

Downside.. big and heavy..

Thanks Hoover for good product!

Always remember to check Amazon as they are pretty hard to beat.. Their checkout is real nice..

 "Hoover Self Propelled Sweeper" 2008-09-15
By B. Perdue (WV)
This sweeper was purchased to replace one like it that was several years older. At that time the Self-Propelled Sweeper cost over $400.00 now I got it for less than half of that! What a deal!

At 60 years old I need a sweeper that almost runs by itself and does a great job too.

 "Disappointed....." 2009-08-30
By Beth A. Heis (Washington, DC)
I am actually quite upset right now. I asked for a nice vacuum cleaner for Christmas about 1.5 years ago and I got this baby. It worked fine for about a year and then I had to start replacing belts. Not hard to do on your own though and not too expensive either. Then the roller stopped moving at all. I'm out of warranty so I buy new belts to try to fix it. I took it to a repair store when that didn't work and the guy said it's the motor that keeps knocking the belts off track and that this happens with Hooovers a lot. He showed me two others in for repair where their motor wasn't as expensive to replace. So I'm back to square one. I need a new vacuum and the repair store told me that Riccar's, while expensive, are good for a long time and come with a 3 year warranty.

"Two things you should know about this vacuum" 2009-07-28
By Thomas F. Harper Jr.
This is a pretty good vacuum with decent suction and the self propel makes it easy to use. My wife wont let me buy anything else ever again.

But there are two things you should know about.

The first is to never pick it up by the handle, but to use the recessed grab area just below the handle. Its intuitive to pick it up by the handle, but you'll damage the on/off switch if you do that and it wont work anymore. They tell you this in the directions and even put a sticker on it telling you not to do this, but I see my wife doing it all the time.

The second is that you can expect to put a new self propel drive belt in about every six months if you use the vacuum frequently. The belt stretches and after about 6 months worth of use the self propel will either not work well or stop working altogether and you may get a yummy burnt rubber smell. Good news is the belts are only a couple of bucks for a package of two. Bad news is you have to take out four screws, wiggle off a panel and it can be a little challenging to get the old belt off the spindle and then work the new one on. Comparing the size of the six month old stretched belt with a new one, you'll see that the old one is considerably larger than the new one.

You'd think they could use a belt thats a bit better made and would last longer, or use a different mechanism. I see an awful lot of bad reviews from people saying the self propel quit working and the unit smelled burnt, so it seems its a common issue.

We've owned three of these and the latter two came with 3 year warranties, although if you bring it in for service with a bad belt you'll get charged for the service call. Bad belts are the owners responsibility. We still have two of them working but on one the wire that actuates the self propel forward and backward (you can see it once you lower the handle) is attached to a slim plastic part and that part broke off about 2 months out of warranty.

So with about 5 minutes of belt replacement a few times a year and a little care around how you pick it up and move it, you can get a lot of life out of one of these, and the self propel really makes light work of the job.

I only took one star off because I think Hoover could do a better job of designing it or making a heavier duty reinforced belt that would last at least a couple of years.

"Great product but not perfect" 2009-06-28
By frieda fix it
I bought this vacuum more than two years ago at a dicount at Big Lots--under $100.00. I wondered if there might be something wrong with the model but decided to take a chance since vacuuming is very hard on my back and we just moved to a house with lots of carpeting. After the small bit of assembley at first try the self propel did not work. I took the handle apart to investigate and believe I found some sort of switch that wasn't on or plugged in or something... put it back together and walla!!...worked like a charm. The self propel belt burned out after about a year and it was tough but I managed to replace it myself after ordering the correct size on line...seemed like it wouldn't stretch that far but I did get it on and have had no more trouble with that. The roller brush also snapped but that was easy to fix. The suction tube gets clogged from time to time when I try to tackle something that really needs a shop vac but I have to say it really does a great job on our dirt and pet hair and though I have had to tinker with it from time to time for the price I paid I am happy with it because it does such a great job and I can vacuum the whole house without a sweat and without breaking my back. I'm a woman but my dad taught me long ago not to be afraid to roll up my sleeves and get a little dirty... most things can be fixed simply and last twice as long.

 "Motor burned up" 2009-04-08
By Sharon Lavery (McMurray, PA USA)
I've had this sweeper less than a year and this morning it totally died after emitting a burning motor smell. It will not turn on. This is the end of a long line of problems with this sweeper. It weighs too much and is top heavy, always tipping over. The hose developed a tear at the junction and has had a series of duct tape repairs for months. The on/off switch broke when it was only a few months old and I've been forced to plug/unplug since then to use it. Very annoying. (I did take the handle apart and 'fix' the switch a few times but it didn't last. I'm no engineer but it looks like a ridiculous design in there - basically like a light switch that toggles off and on as the outer switch is moved up and down. The plastic 'finger' doing the toggling just wears out.) I've had a series of Hoover self propelled vacuums and the quality of this one was noticably poorer than that of its ancestors. The only positive thing I can say is it had good suction. I'm going to try a different brand this time around. And Hoover, if you're listening...stop the slide into cheap crap. Too many companies wrongly think that's the route to survival these days.

 "what a horror!!!" 2009-03-26
By D. Ross (New York, NY USA)
WE bought this machine to clean our spiritual center where the 1600 sq feet are all carpet, little furniture. We wanted something self propelled because of the open expanse of floor. It cleaned well for the first few times and then began to growl, and finally the motor exploded in a shower of sparks and awful smell. It was 4 months old. Since it was under warranty we could get the motor relaced, which took 6 weeks. It then worked Ok for about a year and just recently the on/off switch died and it turned on only when it was plugged in. Just last week it exploded again, and would'nt you know, the warranty had expired! The vaccum repair man said it would be cheaper to buy a new vacuum. I guess it will be no more hoovers. Too Bad!

By Wayne Bradley
True Value took two weeks late and never sent the item I really needed, the whole reason for the order in the first place. Never was told why it wasn't sent, it was simply removed from the purchase order. After calling True Value support number they said they have never carried the item and it was an Amazon problem and that Amazon should have sent an email letting me know that. I argued that Amazon would never know they didn't send the item. The phone call confirmed that they didn't send the part and never would but never really resolved anything.

I did quite a bit of research for a new vacuum before choosing this model. While it is a little heavy, it does a great job at cleaning the floor. Being self-propelled is plus, so you don't really notice the weight until carrying it upstairs. Everything else on it is very good.

This powerful vacuum is fantastic! I've been using it for a couple of months now on carpet, hardwood, wool rugs, and jute rugs. It's worked very well on each surface, and moving from one surface to another is facilitated with a simple shift of a switch.

LOVE the dirt finder and the self-propel features, even though I originally thought they were silly gimmicks. I rely on them both each time I use the vacuum.
