I've owned this vac for about a year and a half now. It does a good job on carpet, ok on hard floors and the filter is easy to clean. The vac has broken down twice now. Once under warranty a circuit board went out. This was replaced painlessly by the closest hoover vac dealer. Now the transmission drive for the HEPA filter has gone out. I took it apart and was not impressed to find plastic gears driving the filter. Pretty cheap engineering. I talked to the vac place and they say they repair a lot of these. My old hoover lasted 10 yrs with no breakdowns (I still use it in the shop) before I upgraded to what I thought would be a better vac. I should have saved the money.

Delivery was prompt and item is fine. However I was never sent any attachments...none, just the upright vacuum cleaner. The vacuum cleaner itself is easy to use. However, it has no intermediate adjustments that lock in. As a result, it is hard to go up on floor surfaces (eg throw rugs) as it requires putting the vacuum totally upright and lifting it and then putting your foot on the base and pulling the arm back down to its totally flexible position.

I just purchased this vacuum yesterday (November 2, 2009) I used it last night and this afternoon. Already the automatic rewind feature is unusable. The unit is indeed heavy and awkward to use. I agree with the other reviewers that it has great suction and pick-up ability, but the fact that it is not very user friendly is why I am going to have to return it to Costco tomorrow. I also made quite a mess trying to empty the canister. The extra hose just makes the unit more awkward.

This thing just sucks! literally. It is a very powerful vacuum and picks up everything--the best and strongest vacuum I ever used. BUT...it is very heavy and hard to move and push. WHen using the attachements it falls over constantly on you and almost takes you out (it is really heavy when it hits you). I have the bruises to prove it--I was doing heavy duty cleaning--vacumming under things and it fell over multiple times--I started watching over my shoulder to make sure it wasn't going to hit me. THe cord gets really really hot when you are using the attachments--hot enough to burn your hand! Forget about emptying the canister--what a mess! All over you, all over the floor. I bought this at Costco thank GOD! It's going back!

I got mine @ Costco last week too. There were quite a few to pick from but for the lower priced vaccuums, this appeared to be the better one. I played with all the buttons to see how user friendly it was. It works really good so far. My husband uses it the most and says that it makes a funny sound when doing the bare floor, but turning off the roller-brush would stop that... All in all, it appears to be a very good product for the price, (around $140 @ Costco).

We just purchased from Costco yesterday ($139 plus tax). Overall this vacuum is great! It is a little hard to clean out the filters but what vacuum isn't. There are a TON of attachments with an extended hose which can add an extra 10 feet. The suction is amazing and picked up everything. I would recommend for normal household duties.

This vacuum must have been designed by J.Edgar Hoover, of the FBI fame. when he was smoking crack.

It really is a POOR QUALITY PRODUCT and has a HIGH PRICE.



The unit becomes clogged with dirt because the filter rotation device does not work properly and the unit must be completely disassembled to clean it out and to try to fix the rotation device.



Now that I have mine completely disassembled I tried to find a new filter on-line. No Luck on that and I used the Hoover Part Numbers, even Hoover's Web Site did not have it.



I estimate it would cost you $100 to have it repaired in a shop, plus parts.

Do not buy this vacuum. I have two problems. Within a month of purchase, it would sporadically lose suction. I could hear a "pop" and then it would start getting great suction again. I should have returned it right then and there. But I put up with it and now that it's past the warranty period, the HEPA filter got too clogged and stopped spinning. It's just like everyone else describes here. Not easily fixable. Do yourself a favor and find a different vacuum.

Very heavy and difficult to maneuver. The brushes are very aggressive to the point of destroying carpeting, even on the highest setting. The canister fills up super fast, unfortunately it is filled more so with shredded carpet than actual dirt. This vaccum is so bad to the point I believe it is unethical for any store to sell it. You would do better to pick the dirt particles up with your fingers than to use this piece of junk.

I received this vaccum as a gift and I was a little bit scared to try it after reading the reviews posted on here. I have to say that I have owned this vaccum for a little under a year and I love it. It has powerful suction and I love the attachments. There are only 2 complaints that I have. 1) I have to constantly empty the canister (this may be due to the fact that my dog sheds like there is no tomorrow) and 2) There are a lot of clear parts so the vacuum always looks dirty. All in all, I am very happy with this vaccum and hopefully I won't regret saying so.

 "Fixing Switch That Won't Turn off" 2009-01-19

I like this vacuum a lot and eventually one day it would not turn off. The actuator inside the handle is plastic and if the switch is stiff the plastic bends and does not rock the switch to off.

Take the two small screws out of the handle and remove the handle (just the reverse of how you assembled it). This will expose the on-off rocker switch. Rock it back and forth manually and the vacuum should turn on and off. If not the switch is bad and needs to be replaced. However, mine was very stiff. It worked when I manually rocked it but was too stiff when I put it back together to turn off.

What has worked for me on this vacuum: I went to radio shack and bought a spray can of Control/Contact Cleaner and Lubricant. It comes with a small piece of tubing. Once the handle was off (again) I put the tube into the top edge of the switch and pushed the button FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND and then did the bottom edge of the switch. I worked the switch manually a couple of times. I repeated the spraying one more time and the rocking. I wiped off any excess that was visible. I put it all back together and it has been working fine for me.

This stuff is made for electrical contacts... HOWEVER, it is to be used very sparingly!!! Also, a new can has a bit of pressure. Be careful that you don't blow some back at you.

My parents used to own a Dyson but they wanted a self-propelled vacuum (the Dyson is a bit heavy to use, especially for older seniors). I got them this because 1. Hoover is supposed to be a leader in vacuums and 2. I had heard the windtunnel vacuums had suction power comparable to Dyson's. While both these claims may be true, this model is a complete lemon. After one year, the belt came undone. They replaced the belt and about a month later the belt came off again. After reading various reviews around the net, there appears to be a pattern: the belt system in this hoover is terrible. Do a search for this model number and the word REVIEW and you will that this is a near universal problem. STAY AWAY FROM THIS VACUUM.

I have owned this vacuum cleaner for 3 months. Already the self-propel switch does not work properly. Most of the time I can't get it to switch from self-propel "on" to self-propel "off". Even worse than that problem is the fact that the vacuum won't turn off! I have to unplug it from the wall to turn it off. I have used this cleaner less than 20 times and think it is a hunk of junk. It cleans ok, but the other problems make it very frustrating to use. My previous Hoover lasted me 20 years with virtually no problems. I won't buy another Hoover product. The construction is cheap and even without the above-mentioned problems, I don't think it will last very long.

The slider is great for quick pickups. The Windtunnel itself is quite heavy and it is painful to lug it around if you have a multi-storied house, but it cleans like a dream. Unsure why Hoover went with this design.

My old Fantom used its 'cyclonic' technology to get most dirt and small particles. The HEPA filter was only used for residual dirt; of which there was virtually none. In other words, the technology employed by the vacuum meant that the HEPA filter would not clog for years. It took over 8 years or so before the HEPA filter needed to be replaced.

That being said, this Hoover uses the HEPA filter as a primary filter. It has *great* suction when new, but by the time I had to empty the canister for the first time, the HEPA filter was clogged! Now there isn't enough suction to spin the 'turbo/pet brush.'

Point is, the HEPA filter should have been used only for *very* small particles, not as a primary filter. Anyone who has used HEPA filters knows that once the filter is clogged, cleaning it does not make it like new again.

To get back to the way the vacuum worked new and out of the box, it appears that you need to replace the HEPA filter each time the canister becomes full. I have found the filters for sale at $10-20 each (add shipping/tax,) not a bad price, but consider that you will need to buy one at least once a month; probably more often.

Some people have said they use cans of compressed air, and other methods to clean the HEPA filter. Not good enough, and it will not suck like new until you replace the filter.

The stick vac on the other hand works great! Only use on hard surfaces, it's not meant for anytype of carpet.
