 "Don't waste your money!" 2010-01-03

Seems great at first. After a couple months though, it constantly overheats and shuts off. It's basically useless at this point unless you don't mind vacuuming your home in bits and pieces over the course of a couple days. Please don't waste your money on this piece of crap!

This vacuum worked ok for the first few months. Then the auto cord rewind got jammed and my husband had to take it apart. After successfully retrieving the cord I decided not to use that function again and just wind the cord on the handle. A few months later it starting overheating. I can no longer vacuum an entire room (even a small room) without the back becoming hot to the touch and it shuts off. I have to wait several hours for it to cool off. I am now researching other vacuums before I purchase. This was the most frustrating purchase that I have made in a while.

"the worse vacuum I have ever owned" 2009-12-09
By Leah Todd (Checotah, OK)
I thought that this might be a pretty good vacuum after reading the other reviews, boy was I wrong. The last vacuum I had was a Kenmore canister that I have had for 13 years. I thought that I would like to try the bagless upright and didn't want to pay the Dyson price. I should have put the money I spent on this one toward the Dyson because this one is a piece of junk. #1 doesn't have much suction. #2 overheats and shuts off (and that was right after I had emptied it). #3 Gets dirt trapped in the ends that can not be removed even if you take it apart with a screw driver. #4 It is heavy (do not get this for your Grandma). I can't wait till my Dyson canister arrives, I should have listened to my husband instead of being cheap, you get what you pay for. The only reason I gave it one star is it hasn't fallen apart yet.

 "Warning: do not buy!" 2009-11-21

Like the other person with belt problems...although I had no problem buying belts for it...the belt was not the problem. Because of very poor design, the brush drive belt ate through the plastic base. I thought the belt was in need of replacement because the brush stopped working, but it turns out the entire plastic bottom piece needs to be replaced, in other words...Time to buy a new vacuum cleaner!! Only after a year of use is unacceptable, and just after the warranty is up!!! I will never buy another $250 Hoover again! For $250, a vacuum should last longer than 1 year!

"Good cleaning, but a hassle" 2009-10-24

I've had the Mach 5 for about 2 years now, and I will say it does a very nice job of picking up dirt - better than any other upright I've owned. It's a little heavier than what I would like, but that's not my main concern. The pet hair attachment is pretty decent, even though it loses brush rotation easily. I love the retractable cord, and the hose length. What I do not like about the Mach 5 is the torture I sustain every time I empty the cup. It seems easy enough; remove the canister, open the trap & empty the contents. However, the trap door doesn't open easily. I usually have to pry it open with a finger after unlatching it. And this always causes whatever falls out to end up on my hands/sleeves. The "loose dirt" will usually fall out of the canister pretty easily, but not the collected dust, hair, etc. This all remains bonded together in the canister. I can shake & tap all I want.. this stuff will not come out on its own. It must be removed by hand, which means I have to squeeze my forearm as far as I can into the canister & pull out the clumps of mess with my fingers. This act itself creates another mess to vaccum (not to mention a bath for me), so I prefer to perform it outside to save myself the trouble - which is not my idea of convenience. There is the option of removing the top of the canister, but it's not any better. Still have to use my hands to free the clumps, all the while dust & dirt particles are flying everywhere.

Overall, I'll say that I look forward to an enhanced version of this unit.. hopefully in time the quality of the cleaner will be combined with cleaner disposal.
