 "Machine Useless After 2 Years of Light Use" 2008-03-16

I have had two of these. The last one was inoperable after 2 years, and I only used it about once a month. It started leaking cleaner fluid all over the floor. There's an "O" ring that failed. Neither Hoover or any of its retailers can replace the "O" ring. Can't find any replacement at any hardware sore. So, the machine is useless. I would've expected Hoover to stand behind its produce.

The carpet attachment is cheaply made and very expensive to replace. It was broken within three months. The hose has numerous tears in it that I have taped until I can purchase a new vacuum. I have owned it less than 2 years. Very disappointed with this product.

I have used my parents 1959 Constellation exclusively for the last 25 years and replaced the motor once. I finally replaced the vacuum, but kept it as a 60's prop. The new one seems to have more suction which is a huge plus. The longer cord and longer hose are FANTASTIC. The only issue I have is that it hovers a lot easier than the old one due to the higher volume of exhaust. The higher exhasut also blows the dust ahead of me so I have to work in a logical path to compensate. To keep it off my heels I put it on top of its power cord as I vacuum. The easiest storage is to wrap the cord around the handle and the hose around the bottom.

I've been needing decent canister vacuum for a while now and finally saved up enough Amazon gift cards to pick up the Hoover Constellation S3345. As far as I know, it's the same as the S3341, except that the S3341 is white and the S3345 is brushed metal.



Upon opening the box, my immediate impression was that the Constellation is a really pretty vacuum cleaner, especially if you like retro-futuristic styling. It looks like a little UFO and the brushed stainless steel surface gives it an air of quality. The top half of the body unlatches and opens up on a hinge to reveal a simple plastic frame to hold the bag in place. The motor is hidden away in the bottom half, covered by an air filter and the bag. There's a small, metal toggle switch on bottom front for the power.



The vacuum comes with a hose, a metal telescoping wand, a plastic attachment clip, and five attachments. The five attachments are the turbo nozzle for carpets, a large brush/broom tool for hardwood floors, a crevice tool, a small round brush tool, and a small rectangular brush tool.



The Constellation itself is a bit heavier than similarly sized vacuums, probably because the body is made of stainless steel rather than plastic. The hose and the wand are also pretty heavy. I didn't have any problems picking up the vacuum and carrying it around in places where it couldn't glide about very easily, but I'm also a 185lbs guy.



Despite it being relatively heavy, the floating-on-air feature makes it extremely easy to pull around. After using it for a few minutes, I realized that I had naturally moved around the room without stopping to tug on the hose to move the vacuum. The best part for me is that it works great on the carpet in my apartment. I'm not really familiar with carpet types, so I can only say that it's the "regular" kind of carpet that you would find in relatively new suburban homes. It does get caught on its own cord and on transitions from one surface to another, but I've always had that issue with canister vacuums so it's not a big deal to me.



If you have hardwood floors, this vacuum would be excellent. It has an incredible amount of suction and the broom-like attachment works great on my linoleum kitchen and bathroom floors. However, the turbo nozzle is only "pretty good" for carpets. When you attach the turbo nozzle, the first thing you'll notice is the loud whine from the spinning beater bar. It isn't powerful enough to really fluff up the carpet like an upright vacuum would. However, it does help a little bit and the suction from the vacuum is more than enough to pick up all but the most adamant pieces of thread or lint. I wish it came with a plain, wide, brushless attachment, which I think would be easier to use than the turbo nozzle.





Pros:

- Very, very cool looking. Stainless steel body and a real toggle switch!

- Tons and tons of power.

- The floating feature actually works and makes it extremely easy to move around.

- Uses HEPA filter bags so it's clean and easy to empty.

- Relatively quiet, aside from the whiny turbo nozzle.



Cons:

- Since it floats, it doesn't really stay still. There are rubberish bumpers on the side to protect it and your furniture though. If you want to vacuum stairs, you'll have to carry it with you.

- Some people might find the attachments to be too heavy.

- Turbo nozzle is only decent for carpets. I wish it just came with a wide, brushless, non-turbo attachment that I could use on carpets.

- Some people might prefer a bagless solution.

I have mostly hardwood floors as well as area rugs in a few rooms. I also have a long hair cat who loves to roll around on the rugs. This vacuum really surprised me, although the head is not electrically powered, it really grabs all the fur! I was a little concerned that the canister would float out of control into walls and furniture, but it didn't. Suction is great, like a shop vac, and unbelievably quiet!! If you have mostly carpet I may stick with an upright, but if not, this is the perfect all floors vacuum.

Got this vacuum direct from Hoover for a lot less than anywhere else. Replaced a top of the line Bosch - way too much to spend on a vacuum! The Hoover has very good to excellent suction. If you have anything more than floors with area rugs and very short pile carpeting - you will not be impressed with the turbo brush head though. It slows down considerably on just my braided rugs, but, does a decent job. Something more plush - it would not do - invest in a vacuum with a powered head for that. Decent tools but attachment to the rack and the rack to the machine is a joke; expect them to fall off constantly. You cannot put the rack and tools on the wand and use the vacuum - they must go on the machine. Unit is quality made, relatively quiet (nothing like the Bosch which was just a hum a high speed)good cord length, minus an auto rewind - but I have found they all eventually fail anyway. Power switch is flimsy and I expect to have to replace it in a year or less. Ours came with a kink in the hose - which resulted in a small hole - Hoover was excellent though - a call to them found a new one with us within two weeks. Here is the big kicker though - it comes with HEPPA filtration bags (must be more than one design, as the one with the machine was different than other Hoover brand ones I purchased here on Amazon)so it will clean the exhausted air down to 99.999% - PROBLEM is the vacuum is designed to exhaust air out the bottom and float on it. The powerfully exhausted plume does a great job of hovering the machine, but, it also means you are blowing anything on the floor up and into the airspace. If you do not vacuum a path where the unit can follow - you are blowing alot of "stuff" all over your room before it ever gets sucked up. On a wood floor - it can clear a large area of dust quick just by blowing it all over. Kind a negates the benefit of the HEPPA bags and I have noticed it. Keep this in mind if you have any allergies at all to what is on your floor.
